ON THIS DAY OCTOBER 24th

Ah well. Another lockdown. So lets get our dose of rugby with a look back at the past games played on 24th October...

Today’s the Day – 24th October

2015-2016 Quins 21-28 Ammanford

WRU Division 1

Despite having their work cut out, the Quins could have been rewarded with a bonus point victory, not a bonus point in defeat. Tactical, basic and the concentration errors currently exhibited by the Quins gave a talented Ammanford team chances and half chances that they used to great effect.

The Quins rattled one of the league’s high flyers, particularly their front five. In the early stages Ammanford’s scrum had more stand-ups than a comedy club. After four minutes Lloyd Bradley converted a penalty when the Ammanford tight-head breached the scrum as he in his quest for daylight.

What seemed a reasonable Quins kick into the visiting twenty-five, merely handed possession back to Ammanford and served as a warning as to how the west Walians could use possession. Moving up-field, Jason Morgan kicked a forty-five yards penalty to level the scores.

More scrum disruption and Lloyd Bradley was off with a quick tap to score in the corner.

The Quins just couldn’t turn the screw as the strong wind hampered goal kicking opportunities. However, slack discipline when feet from the try-line, allowed Ammanford to clear their lines and keep possession with the throw.

The Quins remarkably stole possession from a ruck on the Ammanford line. Two phases later and Rhodri Bwye was under the posts. Bradley converted.

Rattled Ammanford may have been, but they showed a great composure to begin their come back. At 15-3 the Quins trait of switching-off reared its head, as they did not react to a driving maul and flanker Carl Morris was over.

Quins lacked patience in defence and were caught offside. Morgan added the penalty before the half ended.

Lloyd Bradley opened the second half scoring after another scrum infringement.

The Quins’ kicking, chasing and tackling inaccuracies cost them dearly. Winning a line-out the box kick that followed was good, the chase good, but tackling extinct. Wing Dewi Pritchard took a difficult catch on half way and embarked on a run. He remained untouched until he reached the Quins twenty-five and passed to Dafydd Hughes who scored. Morgan levelled the scores.

Josh Mines was put in space and although Scott Williams rounded off the move, the final pass was adjudged forward.

Lloyd Bradley pushed the Quins 21-18 after a ruck offence. The scores were levelled immediately when the Quins failed to collect the kick-off. Despite the furore surrounding referee Craig Joubert’s recent penalty award, the Quins forward in front of the receiver when he knocked on, still felt he could gather the ball that came towards him. Morgan converted.

Despite several close encounters with the Ammanford try-line, a lack of composure gave the visitors pressure-relieving penalties. With the scores level and Ammanford looking stronger at the end than they were at the start, it was imperative the Quins executed everything they did accurately.

Perhaps the most telling lack of accuracy came five minutes from the end. Awarded a penalty the Quins kicked to touch. With a strong wind at your back kicking for touch with distance should not be too difficult a task to execute. However, the kick dropped well short in length and line. Whipping the ball across their back-line, Ammanford’s Adam Owen rounded off the sixty yards move and touched down. Morgan converted and but for a losing bonus point for their considerable efforts, left the Quins empty handed.

1992 – 1993              Briton Ferry 15 – 15 Quins

                                 Central Glamorgan Two

It is always a hard game at Ynymeudwy Road, especially with the hosts playing vigorously when aided by the slope. Quins did extremely well and but for one conversion going over they could have nicked the match which, if considering in all honesty, they did not deserve. It was one of those games in rugby football in which a draw was a fair result.

1987-1988  Bryncethin II 9 – 11 Quins II

This was an extremely tough game played in extreme wind, rain and mud. Despite the heavy conditions, the Quins managed to work the ball away to John Tidball who skidded his way through the mud to score a brace of tries.

The Firsts match at home against the St. Albans was cancelled. The Seconds travelled to the capital city to take on the ‘Buns’ II. It was quite a big defeat.

Someone from the Quins was sent off too. Answers on a postcard please...

Quins continue to pile up the points

Girlings 0 – 8 Maesteg Quins

With another win against Girlings on Saturday the Harlequins have now brought their tally of points scored in the last four matches to 50, whilst only three points have been scored against them.

Quins soon found the home side could not find an answer to the diagonal kick ahead and both Alf Bowen at fly-half and John Bowen in the centre used this to great advantage.

One such kick by Alf Bowen saw the home full back fumble over his own line and he made a doubtful minor just before John Bowen raced through to dive on the ball. This effort was disallowed however.

Gaining possession from a scrum midfield, shortly after Quins three-quarters raced away and Malcolm Wilcox on the right flank broke in field cleverly and then put in a diagonal kick to the corner flag. Again John Bowen was through with a quick burst of speed and he dived to the on the ball over the line to open the scoring.

Attempting three-quarter movements, the home side did not have the best of luck with these efforts. Lineouts and scrums were breaking even, but in the loose excellent foraging by Quins’ pack put them ahead of Girlings.

Quins went further ahead with one of the freakiest tries seen for many a day. Pressing hard near Girlings’ corner flag, Quins were awarded a scrum five yards out. David Lewis, Quins scrum-half, placed the ball in the scrum and the ball was hooked by Girling straight through to the home wing standing behind his own line.

He apparently thought that the ball had been not properly hooked and Lewis claimed the try. Hector Lewis gained the extra points with a tremendous kick from the touchline which put just cleared the crossbar .

In the second half in the few instances but the ball came their way, the Quins backs showed much dash and put in some dangerous runs ignoring the it's now just over a year in treacherous conditions under foot. A tremendous battle ensued amongst the forwards, both packs gaining government ground with some good foot rushes taken from one twenty-five to the other.
