ON THIS DAY OCTOBER 31st

1998-1999

Maesteg Quins 32-3 Bryncoch

In later seasons, these two teams would be the protangonists for league titles. On this occasion it was a big win for the Quins at home to the Neath suburbanites.

There's no real need to show where the Quins one the game. A Peter Jenkins hat-trick, plus two more from the front-row emphasises it was a scrummin', maulin', drivin' victory. Just one of the six tries ws converted.

Tonmawr 61 – 0 Maesteg Quins  Cent Glam Two

This truly was a Halloween nightmare. An embarrassing drubbing made all the more acute by the annihilation being executed by fourteen men. After five minutes the home team were down to fourteen when their hooker was given his marching orders after stamping on the head of a Quins player.

The feel-good factor amongst the Quins soon dissipated when Tonmawr, scored two quick tries up the Whitworth Ground slope. The Quins just weren’t at the races.

Veteran O'Brien clinches game for the Quins

Harlequins (Tir Iarll) 3 pts; Bonymaen nil

Harlequins game the narrow but hard-fought win against a strong bond in mine XV on Saturday. In so doing they have repeated their performance of a few weeks ago by beating a team who in the past have had the edge on them.

Previously matches of always produced tremendous forwards battles with sparkling three-quarter movements but with low scores with Bonymaen always having the edge in the on the Quins. On Saturday at full strength the Quins clinched it with an excellent try by veteran forward Colin O'Brien in the second half.

Dour Defence

During the first half Bonymaen stayed for long periods in the Quins half but could not break through a dour defence. Alf Bowen, John Bowen and Gwyn Williams, the Quins mid-field trio, tackled like demons and Bonymaen were obliged to run across field to keep their movements going.

Best Forward

In this set scrums Bonymaen had the edge, while in the line out through some excellent jumping by Elwyn Jones, Colin O'Brien and Colin Nicholls Quins were well ahead. In the tight there was little in it. Wyndham Thomas and H. Lewis Quins props put their weight and fitness to maximum advantage and while young Clyde Williams Quins’ hooker gave full support.

Best forward afield however was lock-forward Colin Nicholls who kept popping up here there and everywhere in attack and defence.

In Evan Jones Quins possess a nippy, tough scrum-half and his corkscrew running, plus an excellent understanding with his fly-half Alf Bowen makes a valuable asset to his club.

With no score at half-time the struggle continued straight from the resumption.

Clever Kick

Quin's initiated several three-quarter movements without success, but a kick ahead produced the trick however. A bouncing ball could not be cleared by the Bonymaen full-back and the Quins pack were up on the loose ball like greyhounds. A quick heel found E. Jones placed behind. Jones went away with a clever corkscrew run. Finding himself hemmed in he put in a clever kick. In the open space near the Bonymaen 25, again there were several Quins players following up fast and Colin O'Brien the veteran of the side caught the ball on the bounce and showed a clean pair of heels to both defenders and attackers alike to score a good try wide out. The kick failed

Comment - with 53 points for and three against in the last five games against stiff opposition, the Quins seem to be going places. Their record now reads played 11, won 7, lost 3, drawn 1. Points for 96 points against 39. Their three lost matches were lost by 3 points each in two matches while the other was lost by a single point.
