Cardiff Met 47 – 18 Maesteg Quins
Specsavers-WRU Championship
It was disappointing for the Quins to fall to such a landslide defeat.
A conservative Quins had the better of the scrum contest, gleaning single penalty and pushover tries as a result. Mike Owen grabbed the touchdown and Tadgh McGuckin goaled two penalties.
Yet scrum dominance alone was not enough against the multi-talented Met.
In most other aspects of play Quins had to labour their way through the match in attack and defence. Alternatively, the fantastically talented Archers liberally spread the ball, shredding the Quins like post-election manifestos.
Nobody ever goes onto the field to play badly or make mistakes. Yet it didn’t help when someone elected to open their mouths, even though the Quins had been awarded penalties. This handed ten points to the Met, killed off momentum building possibilities, the chances of accumulating bonus points and made their team-mates needlessly work harder for the cause.
Positives were few, yet everyone knows such off days are part of sport and the measure of the team will be how they respond in two weeks time.
Tata Steel are the visitors to South Parade on December 28th. It is hoped some of the injured can return in a match against one of the teams positioned below the Quins.
All that is left is to wish everyone a happy and enjoyable Christmas.
