ON THIS DAY APRIL 13TH

Today would have been the 73rd birthday of Quins great Terry Whelan. So lets look back at some of the games that took place on this wonderful character's birthday. Some of the games Terry would have seen with his own eyes. Some came before he was born and the first match we return to he was upsettingly no longer with us to share.

2010 – 2011 (Wed)

Maesteg Quins 30 – 17 Tonyrefail

Glamorgan County Silver Ball Semi-Final

Dairy Field Llanharan

Quins got off to a perfect start when Tonyrefail were penalised straight from the kick-off and Gareth Lewis kicked the penalty.

Unforced errors then prevented the Quins from extending their lead despite dominating play. Then Tonyrefail played tremendously in maintaining possession only to see a fairly easy penalty missed.

Lewis opted for a long range goal of 52 metres and kicked it.

Quins found momentum hard to come by. Often when trying to pick up the pace of the game with quick rucking, the passes out were blocked by the entire opponents front five retreating at a glacial pace.

After a series of sustained pressure Rhodri Milsom powered his way over and Lewis converted for a 13-0 lead.

Worse was to come for Tonyrefail when their influential No.8 was sin binned either for deliberately coming in at the side of a rapidly advancing driving maul and dragging it down just a few feet from the line. He was despatched to the sidelines and having had their attempts to score a try thwarted, Quins chose a ten metre scrum. Seven men or not, it was a mightily impressive drive and the referee awarded a penalty try as the Tonyrefail front three stood up to hinder Quins' progress. Lewis converted and the half-time score stood at twenty points to nil.

Did Tonyrefail lie down? Not likely and they scored three tries of their own - converting one.

The final result was in doubt until the final ten minutes. Replacement Christian Cody scored a try with his first touch of the ball and Ryan Lovett also scored at the posts. This move started in the Quins twenty-five.

Andrew Healey played exceptionally well with his defensive work and ball carrying.

Quins were deserved winners and looked forward to a return to the Brewery Field, scene of their dramatic inaugural Silver Ball victory in 2001, for a Glamorgan County Final tussle with Mountain Ash.

2001 – 2002

Maesteg Quins 38 – 12 Pyle

Division 5

How the referee allowed Pyle to spoil with impunity is beyond the belief of anyone who played and watched the match.

Still it was an excellent six try victory. Having gradually improved under the eagle-eyed guidance of Colin Roberts; future Aberafan, Swansea and Maesteg second row Gavin Ronan made his first team bow.

Where are they now?

Richard Brace can be seen at the club most Saturday evenings, having ruined the afternoon for many a rugby player across south Wales after becoming a WRU referee.

Matthew Hart should still be playing, he's fit enough. He is a fitness instructor and his young lad who looks an exceptional talent, turns out for the Munchquins on Sundays.

Andrew Leighton coaches the Quins.

Employed as a gnome by BCBC, Shane Williams can be seen adorning roadsides and verges across the borough holding his trusty ornamental strimmer. He also props up the bar at the Blaenllynfi and goes on Lions tours.

Perpetual nuisanse and rash to the opposition Simon Lyons has turned to golf.

Having captained the 2nds, Leon Crow is a veteran performer for the 2nds, but usually at flanker. Iain Morris is another veteran performer for Nantyffyllon IIs.

It doesn't mean he's following in the footsteps of the illustrious Dr. Dozy, but Ryan John picks up dogs. He is the impounding officer for BCBC.

Talented Paul Treloar, the kicking back-five forward turned to football.

Tyrone Hughes cured his wanderlust by the time he arrived for his second stint at the Quins having travelled to England, Scotland, France and Canada to play rugby. He now supervises young adults and trains them to make wooden things. Also coaches the Welsh Deaf rugby team.

Soccer convert Andrew Winston has not been seen for a considerable time since bowing out of rugby, but if you want to put a massive tool a box Winston's your man, as he works of an industrial equipment hire firm in Wildmill.

Living in Bridgend Lee Sparrow, eventually gave up a couple of seasons ago after a long and illustrious time in the game. Having discovered he had actually broken his back (!), Lee is awaiting remedial surgery. Apparently they can't find scapels strong or sharp enough to pierce his skin.

Of the others still playing: Gavin Ronan is representing the Old Parish. Former Quins and Maesteg captain Lyndon Davies is plying his trade at Nantyffyllon. He even turned out for Neath this season.

Anthony Dawkins, Peter Jenkins and Nick Flay are all still turning out for the Quins 2nds. Anthony captained the team for several seasons, Peter [Pan] will never grow old and Nick Flay is the only twenty-three year old to have played twenty-seven seasons of senior rugby!

1995-1996                 Taibach 27 - 28 Quins

This was the final Division 8a (Central) league match of the season, before a round of Central Glamorgan Martin Thomas Cup matches would take the Quins on a cup run to a cup final defeat at Llynfi Road.

As so often in matches between the Quins and the Tigers, something happens. This was a thriller which the Quins just nicked.

1990 – 1991                  Maesteg Quins 30 – 20 Llanishen

Buoyed by a good performance against Vardre three days earlier [L 19-20 in Lizard's 1st XV debut], this was an enthusiastic and vibrant exhibition from the Quins. The ball could be spread and kept tight in equal measure and was a fine all round display by the team.

Gary Dawkins and Peter Jenkins repeated their try-scoring feats from three days previous and Geraint Jones found and created space in equal measure.

15. Andrew Davies (T 2C) 14. Lenny Fields (T) 13. Richard Parry 12. Jonathon Vincent

11. Mark Powys 10. Andrew Lewis (C) 9. Geraint Jones (2T)

1. Dai Berry 2. Shane Williams 3. Steve Cody 4. Terry Adams 5. Gary Dawkins (c) (T)

6. Charles Ruffell 8. Lester Jones 7. Peter Jenkins (T)

Replacement

16. Rhys Jeffrey for Peter Jenkins

At full back you'll see Ben Davies' dad in the one season he had at South Parade before he could feel the beat of the tamborine and became a 'Nanty Queen'.

Andrew Lewis who is the father-in-law elect to big booted Swansea and occasionally Quins full-back Owen Howe was at out-half.

Notice only one replacement out of two.

1899-1900 (Fri)   Maesteg Quins –v- Maesteg Rangers        MGL

We don't have complete records of the match but put your money on Peter Jenkins scoring a try!
