MATCH PREVIEW: WHEN THE QUINS PLAY YSTRAD RHONDDA WE'LL BE THERE

Four separate leagues feature within the WRU Championship. Pontypool are in a one team competition of their own, with their prized destiny or catastrophic disaster coming at the end of the league season. The second is between three clubs for the runners up spot. The third will end with two teams who will be able to breathe easier as the season enters its denouement and the biggest sub-league will include six teams, all vying not to be in the bottom four.

Quins head to Parc Gelligaled on Saturday to take on Ystrad Rhondda. Ystrad have certainly hit the ground running after promotion from Division One East. Currently they lie third and this is their likely position at the season’s end.

Highly mechanical, the Rhondda men are a well drilled and talented unit. At South Parade the Quins were always chasing the game and the visitors were deserved winners, even though a few chances went begging for the coal black and blood reds.

A win in the Rhondda would be spectacular and without doubt, a fantastic achievement, to match even the biggest of past victories. It will be uncompromising and tough. Premier league outfit Llanelli needed extra time to finally shake Ystrad off their tails in the WRU Cup first round encounter.

Yet this is the task. A win would set out the Quins stall to move away from the ‘scared six’ section of the league. Thoughts of the immense feelings of a fantastic achievement and job well done need to be at the forefront of the players’ minds. That is the motivation. To play and beat a cracking team like Ystrad Rhondda, you need to put in a hell of performance yourself.

Quins will have devised their plans, but discipline will be paramount. No easy yards or points can be handed to Saturday’s host team, they don’t need a helping hand. Defence will have to be at its best and the set-piece on its best form.

Those errors in attack have to be eradicated. Quins showed they could go through multiple phases at home and they have to do so again by possessing patience. At home they tried to pass their way through a brick wall Ystrad defence. Eventually, when they mixed direct play their continuity improved. Additionally, the kicking game will need to be part of the overall ploy to unpick Ystrad’s defence, with deft defence stretchers a must.

Saturday is a huge day not just for league points, but the challenge to raise your game and stretch yourself is an even more tantalising prospect. Play your best to beat the best. The players must be chomping at the bit and the game will surely be a great contest. When the coal black and blood reds play in the Rhondda we'll be there.
