On These Days... March 30th and April 6th

FIFTY-TWO YEARS AGO THIS AND NEXT WEEKEND

Do you know the old bloke who, every Saturday, sits in the corner at the back of the bar with the Doc, Jonesy and Robert Williams? His name is Ashley Davies.

This short extract is taken directly from the soon [max 12 months] to be published: 'You Ain't Seen Nothing Like... The Official History of Maesteg Harlequins R.F.C. It tells how, this very weekend and next, fifty-two years ago Ashley...

Three days prior to 1974, Ashley Davies kicked all the points in a 9-nil win over Newbridge United. His first of three penalties took him to a century of points. Against Penarth Athletic in February, he beat his personal best of 131 with thirteen points [T 3PG] to move on to 135 seasonal points. Not that anybody knew of historical records at that time, but with two months of the campaign remaining, Alan Griffiths’ seven-year club record of 152 was within Davies’ sights.

Alan Griffiths’ record remained in-tact when Red Rum won his second Grand National and Paper Lace’s ‘Billy Don’t Be A Hero,’ was UK No.1. However,  Ashley Davies’ single conversion at Swansea Uplands, made him the second player to reach a seasonal sesquicentennial.

A week later at Cefn Cribwr, a Davies conversion and penalty eclipsed the club’s previous high. He went on to add another ten points to the tally to raise the bar to 165.
