Er Cof - In Memory Brian Williams

It is with great sadness, Maesteg Harlequins RFC received the heartrending news of Brian Williams’ death.

Brian played for the Quins from 1971 until 1989. Over those eighteen seasons, he turned out 271 times, amassing 550 points. In 1972-1973, Williams passed a century of points and in 1971-1972 equalled the long-standing individual scoring record, with fourteen points in a match against Llandaff North Athletic.

Off the field, Brian used his highly tuned painting and decorating skills to spruce up the clubhouse - gratis. Something he did for a final time when the club achieved Championship status.

Post-match revelries were never complete without Brian's rendition of 'Old Shep,' with Gary Dawkins as the faithful hound and everyone in the bar with their socks over their ears. Members from many a club from Scotland to South Wales, Wexford to Wimbourne fondly remember this particular 'turn.'

For a dozen years Brian lived with the dark spectre of severe illness. Predictably, he faced it with his usual ‘devil may care’ attitude, his trademark characteristic as a rugby player and human being. There was no self-pity, just a determination to continue living life.

Everyone at the club extends their utmost sympathies to Brian’s family, which includes our long-standing Chairman Robert Williams.

May one of Maesteg Harlequins characters rest in peace. We all know, Brian's in a 'wonderful home.'
