STAND BY FOR ACTION... TOP TWO MEET AT SOUTH PARADE

Round five’s stand-out fixture this Saturday sees last season’s second and third placed teams face each other tomorrow as first and second, in a South Parade top of the table clash.

Maesteg Quins have a 100% record going into the game while Bonymaen are unbeaten, but drew their away fixture against an extremely strong Ystalyfera at Ynysdarren.

Fixtures between the two clubs first occurred in the 1950s. When the Quins waned and Bonymaen boomed fixtures ended. League rugby saw the rise and rise of the Parc Mawr outfit, while the Quins languished in the lower echelons of the properly organized pyramid system of old.

Bonymaen were just one step away from the Premier league, losing out in an ill-tempered play-off at the Talbot Athletic Ground.

Their then coach, Richard Webster later became the head honcho at the Old Parish.

Out of respect to the Swansea suburbanites, their history and powerful play makes them a prized scalp for the Quins. To beat Bonymaen – you have to play well and not just well, you have to really extend yourself. This is what happened in the final game of last season.

The Quins didn’t just play beyond themselves, their performance was astronomically good and because it was against such powerhouse opposition, the performance was definitely the greatest ever in the club’s history. Bonymaen too were typically man enough to acknowledge the Quins’ dominance that evening.

As yet the Quins have yet to lower Bonymaen’s colours at Parc Mawr, but the same is true of Bonymaen at South Parade. This is something the proud Parc Mawr men will be keen to achieve and show the Quins their last match here was a ‘one-off’.

Of the six games played between the clubs since 2008, Bonymaen just eclise the Quins as they have managed a draw at the Maesteg men’s home. The Quins would love to go ahead in the series.

With both teams seemingly as close as they can be to full strength it promises to be a cracking encounter whatever the weather, as the squads are equally capable of changing tactics to compete in any conditions.
