2015-2016 Maesteg Quins 28-29 Seven Sisters WRU Div 1 WC
Having beaten Maesteg at home the previous week to open their seasonal account, a second home fixture in as many week gave the Quins an opportunity to push forward. It didn’t work out that way.
Seven Sisters were promoted as Division Two South-West runners-up to the Quins the previous season. A home win and a pulsating 27-all draw at Maes Dafydd win 2014-2015 were good omens for the Quins.
However, player/coach Dean Ronan had left for Bridgend and there was a little disorientation. It was to be a relegation avoidance season.
This was as pulsating as the game five months earlier with the odd point in fifty-seven separating the teams. Man mountain Teifion Jones from Pontyclun and dually registered with Bridgend touched down for the first time.

This was to be just one game in a nightmare season for the club. A very youthful Quins, particularly the pack, were no match for the vale of Neath club.
For a club founded on mines and those who plunged the depths of the earth for a living, the last miner to represent the Quins was part of this team.

1992 – 1993 Maesteg Quins 13 – 14 Cefn Coed Schweppes - WRU Cup [1]
This was a disappointing, unexpected first round cup failure, against a club who were still or just left the ranks of Junior Union.
Quins created few chances, lacked cohesion and were certainly devoid of true ball carriers. The few chances that were created were not capitalize on. It was a stuttering, unconvincing performance all round.
One long-standing follower asked “What went wrong?”. There were a number of reasons for defeat and the manner in which it was played out. The simple answer was Quins were just not as good as they collectively thought they were.

Quite what the ‘Open Cup’ was is debateable. This Thursday night fixture against Bridgend Athletic who were formed just two seasons earlier was the fourth First XV game of the season.
If you call in the club later today you’ll see the points scorers in the far end of the bar.
