CWM LLYNFI 10s RUGBY - Round 1

Llynfi Valley 10s Cup

After such a long lay-off, it was a wonderful evening for spectators to watch players experience the joy of playing rugby.

All four Llynfi valley clubs launched the inaugural round of the Llynfi Valley 10s Cup at South Parade. Maesteg played Maesteg Celtic and Maesteg Harlequins met Nantyffyllon.

Maesteg 17 – 33 Maesteg Celtic

First up was the Maesteg and Celtic encounter. An extremely youthful Celtic took the game to Maesteg very early on. Rhys Bevan-Jones being the chief ball carrier for the Celts, as he took out several tacklers with each carry.

The Garth men took a three tries lead when they exploited gaps in the Old Parish defensive line close to the breakdown area and skipped through.

Maesteg managed to nick a hard earned try before the change of ends, but It looked bleak for Maesteg at the turnaround as they lacked possession and territory.

Yet the black and ambers managed to turnaround affairs. Tommy George resembled an angry wild boar on the charge as he broke several tackles and dragged a couple of would-be tacklers with him, on his one-man assault of the Celtic defence.

Attempting to kick a penalty to touch, for all intents and purposes the ball appeared to be drifted over the dead-ball line. Dropping acutely the ball bounced in-goal and back at the perfect height for the kicker to reclaim the ball and dive over in the corner untouched.

Although level on tries, conversions were the problem for Maesteg. However, their period of dominance had come to an end.  Celtic pulled away with two more tries. Their try scorers: Gethin Tremlett (2), Leon Evans, Ben Poole and Tom Mines. The conversions were shared with Jake Harris kicking three and Thomas George one from two.

Maesteg Quins 19 – 26 Nantyffyllon

Just like the first game, Nantyffyllon stormed into the lead scoring three tries before the Quins registered their first score.

Nanty looked far more accomplished in their ‘10s’ tactics. They were able to put players into space, knew when to pass and didn’t take contact at every opportunity. In contrast the Quins seemed all at sea, too often looking for contact or trying to pass when tackled that took the pace out of play.

Having got back into the game, Nantyffyllon pounced on a Quins passing error to score.

For the Quins Cameron Jones made several line-breaks and Harry Morgan-Grant in the midfield was the best player on show the entire evening. However, the spoils deservedly went to Blosse Street.

Maesteg Quins 19

Tries: Cameron Jones; Jakob Williams; Harry Morgan-Grant

Cons: Harry Morgan-Grant (2)

Nantyffyllon 26
