ON THIS DAY SEPTEMBER 14th: From Green Stars to Scarlet

Taking a look backwards before Saturday's game, the past matches that are recorded played on September 14th really plots the path of the Quins. From the non-league days of the 1950s, to the lower National Leagues to hosting Llanelli in the Welsh Challenge Cup.

2013-2014     Div 2 West    Newcastle Emlyn 10 – 29 Quins

It was a long trek west. The weather was wonderful, the welcome superb and the result against a future Championship club even better, as Lee Ronan went on a monomaniacal quest to beat Newcastle Emlyn on his own. He scored a hat-trick.

6. Sean Cleary 8. Andrew Healey 7. Gavin Burridge (T)

16. Daniel Hughes 17. Leon Evans  18. Lee Jones  19. R. Teesdale

1996 – 1997  Div 7 Central           Aberafan Green Stars 17 – 10 Quins

This was a totally lackluster Quins performance. Nobody seemed to want to challenge the Fighting Irish. Ryan David grabbed an early try but things got progressively worse as the game went on.

15. Martin Wilkshire 14. Darren Jones 13. Jonathon Vincent 12. Andrew Evans 11. Mark Page

10. Ryan John (CP) 9. Darren Phelps

1. Andrew Kidger 2. Shane Williams 3. Lee Sparrow (c) 4. Ryan David (T) 5. Terry Adams

6. Simon Lyons 8. Peter Jenkins 7. Neil Davies

16. Dai Berry 17. Mark 'Ted' Thomas 18. Terry Halfyard 19. Gavin Thomas

1996 – 1997              Quins II 41 – 0 BP Llandarcy II

An emphatic six try victory over the Oilmen showed further improvement in 2nd XV performances compared to previous seasons.

15. Robert Evans 14. Lee N. Jones (T)  13. Jason Thomas 12. Andrew Rossiter

11.Robin Bevan 10. P.G. Evans (T 4C P)  9. Paul Edwards (T)

1. Gareth Bowen (T) 2. Lindon Jenkins (c) 3. David Jenkins 4. Larry Davies

5. Derek Adams (T)  6. Steve Thomas (T) 8. Mark Petty 7. Peter Bowen

16. Rhodri Williams 17. Leighton Walters

1988 – 1989  (Wed) Maesteg Celtic II 0 – 15 Maesteg Harlequins II

This was an excellent 2nd XV win at Llangynwyd. Appearing for the Quins was was former Celtic scrum-half Gareth ‘Pitman the Hitman’ Williams seemingly upset at being dropped by the Garth club a week earlier (he was 43!), he ruthlessly lived up to his sobriquet. Problem was he wasn't sure who he should be punching!

15. Mike Kehoe (c) 14. Robert Evans 13. Terry Halfyard 12. Wayne Whelan (T)

11. Lenny Fields (T) 10. PG Evans (2C DG) 9. Gareth Williams

1. Dai Berry 2. John Thomas 3. Terry Jones 4. Darren Phillips 5. Dennis Brennan

6. Paul Phillips 8. Adrian David 7. Steve Phillips

1957-1958     Harlequins (Tir Iarll) 0 – 3 Bonymaen

Despite the best efforts of the impressive Quins skipper David Brown, the Tir Iarll Quins could not record a score. Even being the second oldest surviving Quins player at 87 years old (behind nonogenarian Arthur Lewis), Mr. Brown looks as if he could still run out today.
