ON THIS DAY OCTOBER 3RD

Today’s the Day – October 3rd

2015-2916     Maesteg Quins 20 – 5 Builth Wells SWALEC Division One

It takes great character to put a ninety points defeat behind you and produce a victory the following week. It helps if you are playing home against the league’s basement club, but the Quins have got a poor record against their bogey team – the Bulls of Builth.

The increasingly youthful Quins were reminiscent of the Welsh team as they were forced into making eight changes to the programmed starting line-up. In a greatly re-jigged team a scrum half and wing occupied the centre berths.

Builth Wells too are going through a period of transition and fielded a patched up, fresh-faced side. Both teams attempted to play running rugby. Often it didn’t work and golden opportunities were bungled, but the attempts to put the ball through the hands made the game more enjoyable in the South Parade sunshine.

Quins took an early lead with a Lloyd Bradley penalty for a high tackle. Soon after Bradley missed a second shot at goal for a midfield offside.

Then a Quins penalty didn’t find touch. Visiting full-back Gethin Lewis gathered and with a high kick, returned the ball deep inside Quins territory. The tackle that followed was so ridiculously late it was in its own time zone. The act showed a lack of maturity and did the Quins absolutely no favours.

Booting to touch, the Bulls expertly drove the Quins over the line with second row Dale Oatley at the bottom of the rolling maul.

A poor re-start and Builth bounded up-field. Beneath their posts the Quins came offside, but the penalty was inexplicably missed.

The Quins gave Builth a taste of their own driving maul medicine. It didn’t complete the job, but two phases later Ieuan Evans slipped through and dabbed down under the posts. Bradley converted.

Lloyd Bradley made a fantastic break on half-way. Mesmerising the Bulls defenders by showing them the ball, Bradley weaved his way through the defence, blowing it wide open. The Quins out-half transferred to Kieron Watkins who popped back inside to Owen Watkins, who ran in to score an excellent try and Bradley converted.

Builth Wells are a well drilled team and their tight pick-up and drive forward play caused Quins a lot of early problems.

Often the Quins’ created space and overlaps, but fumbling fingers ended fine approach work. Given the large number of changes in personnel, the disjointed nature of the performance could be expected.

Despite commencing a five yards scrum drive against a pack that started to creak, a hand was inexplicably used and another promising Quins attacking position was lost.

Lloyd Bradley’s second penalty was the only change to the scoreboard in the second half as defences reigned supreme. Passive scrummaging took away some of the Quins attacking effectiveness, but the commitment and quality of tackling from both defences was exceptional. This is where stand-out performer Kieron Watkins excelled. Although a potent attacking weapon, he popped up often out of the blue to defy numerous attacks.

Joe Symmons did well to get the ball away from the keenly contested ruck area and Lloyd Bradley orchestrated affairs well. Up front the line-out went well and the front row, along with Steve Williams and Aled Evans worked hard in the loose to ensure the Maesteg men gleaned a much-needed win.

2009 - 2010               Maesteg Quins 7 – 12 Nantyffyllon

Five matches and five defeats and this one against near neighbours Nantyffyllon made for a bleak start to the season. Such season and the characters within them are what clubs are built upon.

Now a decade ago, this campaign saw the Quins drop down to Division 4. It’s been an upward trajectory since then.

Geraint Evans scored the Quins’ only touchdown. Another five pointer would have secured a draw and a conversion something better. It was just a lack of all-round experience the Quins lacked.

1998-1999

1992 – 1993              Maesteg Quins 15 – 27 Gilfach Goch

After a morale boosting victory over Nantyffyllon, Quins entertained a Gilfach Goch team who were playing at a level several leagues higher than the Quins. They were a team who were going places and in the middle of this decade, they were to appear in three Silver Ball finals, winning two of them.

Although disappointing to lose at South Parade, the Quins put up a very good show, none more so than prop Andrew Kidger who notched a notable try double.

His first was an excellent drive from a back of a lineout peel, his second a burrowing effort from a close range ruck.

1987-1988     Ogmore Vale 6-17 Maesteg Quins         Central Glam Div 3

The league started on this, the first weekend of October. It was a very good away win to pick up two points at the Junction Field. The pace of Quins play proved to much for the hosts.

1987-1988     Maesteg Quins II 7 – 48 Whitland II

Things couldn’t have got much worse for the Seconds. A crushing defeat at the hands of rugby hotbed Whitland meant there was little to celebrate.

However, this was Phil ‘Mad Dog’ Jones’ 100th match. It was also the first time father and son duo Ian ‘Dinky’ and Lyndon Philip showed up in the same team. The older member of the family scoring the Quins only try.

1987-1988     Llanharan III 12 – 15 Maesteg Quins III

Thanks mainly to Robert Butler’s boot, thee Thirds came back from Llanharan with a fine win under their belts. Even if they had lost, there were certainly enough characters to enjoy post-match festivities.
