WHERE THERE'S A [KENFIG] HILL - THERE'S A WAY

After many fraught days trying to fill a fixture void, it is with absolute delight for the Quins our highly competitive friends of old – Kenfig Hill RFC, came forward to solve the problem. The Mules wonderfully and sportingly stepped into the breach, in what will be the first fifteen-a-side game for eighteen long, boring months.

At present, the first match recorded between our clubs took place in the 1929-1930 season. Two matches were played but the results are unknown. Those were the days when the Quins were known as the Rovers.

The last match between the clubs was played at Crofft Goch on Twelfth Night 2018. That game ended in a 5-28 victory for the Quins, who were on a long unbeaten run that set them up for the Division One title and subsequent play-off success to reach the Championship.

Mules remained in League One West Central and prior to the 2020 abandonment of all rugby, were sited in eighth spot. However, traditionally Kenfig Hill struggle in the depths of winter. They flourish in the drier months and the harder grounds, when their backs are more often than not unstoppable. The season ended just as they were about to enter, what the Kriegsmarine U-boat skippers would call, their “happy time.” An ascent of the table was imminent.

Furthermore, their points difference of minus three after fourteen games was negligible. It illustrated just how tight League One West Central is.

Before the game starts the Quins know what to expect. A nuggety pack of Mules and an adventurous back-line, who will prosper in the dry conditions and be a handful to contain. A thorough, expert test for the travails yet to come.

Chomping at the bit to take the field, the Quins have claimed the Cwm Llynfi 10s title, but the fifteen-a-side game is what everyone wants to see. A number of new faces will blend in with the old. While the pack are familiar faces, Tom Evans whose work scuppered his rugby playing, plays loose head.

Behind, the excitement of seeing Jakob Williams return to the fold after injury and partnering his good friend, impressive former Bedwas man Lewis Evans at half-back is a mouth-watering prospect.

In mid-field former Cardiff Met three-quarter Brandon Huntley will be keen to put a marker down, building on the classic creativity and cutting edge he showed during the 10s tournament.

At full-back, livewire Harry Morgan-Grant will be looking to take any chance given to him and create a few of his own. His finishing ability was clear for all to see and the former Glamorgan Wanderer wants to show his electric paces in the fifteen man game.

Jamaican under-23 international Akeem Eubank-Anderson will make his appearance for the Quins at some point from the bench, alongside another exciting promising prop prospect Ethan Langley who impressed last season.

After a number of years career building, it is fantastic to see Daniel Hughes coming back for a spot more South Parade antics. Father Mike will need to clear the blockage he usually gets in his throat when cheering on the Quins.

To our visitors Kenfig Hill, supporters, already acquainted players and the new faces welcome. It will be warm – it’s July, but it will be brilliant to get back into the swing of things with friends old, new and those we’ve yet to meet.

See you all Saturday.
