Is Saturday the first time a Quins side has met Llanelli?

Maesteg Reserves -v- Llanelli IIs

While the jury is still out on whether Maesteg Quins were, at one time, Maesteg’s Reserves, Saturday’s match may not be the first time Quins have locked horns with a Llanelli team. On Saturday February 3rd 1923 Llanelli II visited Llynfi Road.

In the ‘Reserves’ team Murray on the wing was a 1921 Dewar Shield winner with Maesteg Schools. He was part of the team that beat Llanelli Schools in the final and was a potent try scorer. Even in the days when 6-nil was considered a thumping, Murray notched up two tries a match on several occasions and even scored four in one senior fixture. Former Quins player Robert Murray is his son, therefore former Quins three-quarter Andrew Murray his grandson and there are great-grandsons playing for the mini-Quins and Munch-Quins. Apparently a fiery character, he went on to fight for the International Brigade in the Spanish Civil War.

Tal Llewellyn a Caerau colliery worker was another prolific try scorer and a renowned local cricketer. He was step-father to the late Quins tourist, octogenarian cricketer and nightclub attendee Glyn Thomas.

Dai Pugh was one of three rugby playing policemen brothers from Bryn: Dai, Seth and Charlie. Charlie played for Maesteg and represented Wales four times at prop.

Whether the Reserves were the predecessors of the Quins doesn't really matter, as Saturday is certainly the first occasion Maesteg Harlequins have played Llanelli at first team level. Unbelieveable really.

Wonder if there are any links to the Llanelli 2nds of 1923 and their side on the weekend.
