MATCH REPORT: SOME GLOSS IN PAINFUL LOSS

Saturday September 21st

Bargoed 53 - 0 Maesteg Quins

WRU Championship

Not even the likes of Pontypool managed to 'nil' and put fifty points on the Quins last season, but big budgeted Bargoed did just that in the searing September heat. The recently relegated Bulls want an immedite return to the Premier league and set out their stall in their first home match of of 2019-2020.

On the back of a twenty-all draw in the opening week and the first-half performance in this match which saw them lead just 13-0, foolish predictors would have come to the conclusion that the Blues would not make the cut at the top of the league. Suddenly, in the opening seconds of the second half their season kicked-off. Some of the tries were extremely well manufactured, showing vision and clinical ability to test the best in the Championship. In defence the hosts were strong too, but not infallible. Clubs in the upper echelons will punish Bargoed and finish defensive breaches.

Last season the Quins were lack-lustre in some matches and their minds seemed elsewhere. This match was not such an occasion, as they managed to test their hosts early on gleaning a number of penalties and promising field positions. Late in the match there were a couple of clear breaks. Without trying to cover over the multiple coin wide cracks every player without exception offered positives. It was warhorse Lee Ronan who led the way and his example inspired others not to shirk a single responsibility. Nathan Ace was another whose hard work was to be greatly admired.

The younger element certainly created a good starting point to reference their upward trajectories. Ethan Longley kept his body shape extremely well despite the difficult scrum conditions. Cameron Thomas entered the boiling fray and soon had more carries than 'The Old Woman Who Lived In A Shoe.'

Gavin Burridge is another who will never be found wanting, along with Healy, skipper Williams, Jay Ronan and another stalwart Geraint Evans.

Quins have gone through too many of these chastising experiences. Ystalyfera (62-7) in 1997. Banwen (55-17) in 1995, Pontycymmer (49-3) in 1996, Tondu (59-3) in 1995, Bridgend Athletic (67-6) and Skewen 91-7. All league games meant to be competed against equals. By the way, none of these games were in the second tier of Welsh rugby. These results didn't define a club, neither did they define the individuals who played on those days. They never, ever do if the players insist it doesn't happen..

Every Quins player contributed something positive to the effort. Every player has earned the right to compete in the Championship or signed up to challenge and enjoy themselves in the toughest of leagues. Their strength of character will pull them through as it has previously - it will do so again. Being outclassed or outgunned is not terminal, neither does it define a club, team or individual. They never, ever do.

Next week Cross Keys come to South Parade. It has a 'must win' feeling to it already. It promises to be a game not to be missed.
