ON THIS DAY: JANUARY 15th: HEALY HAT-TRICK END OF SPORTS - A STITCH IN TIME - 200TH APPEARANCE

Today’s the Day – January 15th

2010 – 2011          Maesteg Quins 30 – 0 Bridgend Sports

                              SWALEC-WRU League Division 4

Despite being a much smaller and less experienced pack, the Quins eight were magnificent in setting up this Andrew Healy inspired victory at South Parade.

The Quins defence was miserly, yet the Sports stubborn tackling was also a key feature of this game. Flankers Punter and Wallis, along with centres Ellis and Boobyer, held Quins at bay for long periods. The Quins may have been guilty at times of running into opponents and not space, except for the notable exception of Geraint Evans who was elusive as he eyed a gap and used it to good effect.

Nevertheless the Quins continuity play, coupled with deft passing out of contact was superb. Lewis Tutt was destructive in defence and constructive in attack, while No. 8 Rhys Roberts made ground at every opportunity. Prop Richard Teesdale undoubtedly played his best game for the club and second row Daniel Hughes was prominent.

The referee halted several promising home assaults with some pedantic decision making, but eventually the Quins broke the deadlock. Constant recycling left the Sports short of numbers out wide and as the ball was spread across the line yet again, wing Nathan Morgan found himself over the try-line unopposed. Lewis converted and quickly added two penalties to stretch the Quins lead to thirteen points.

Morgan David left the field permanently with a laceration injury along the full length of his intimate masculine area. Fortunately medical staff had the required specialist microscop to insert the single stitch to repair the wound.

More phase play near half-time saw flanker Andrew Healy in midfield and with space between the remaining defenders, he scorched a path on an angled twenty-five metre run to the try-line.

The second half continued in the same vein, with the Quins maintaining fluidity, while Sports defended stubbornly and relied on their captain to lead from the front.

Healy added a second try by burrowing over close to the posts, which Lewis converted. 25 – nil up and with a solid defence, the match was virtually won. It was time for the home side to focus on securing a bonus point try.

Healy collected a yellow card for his troubles, but soon after his return he flung himself onto a deft close quarter pass near the Sports line and dived over to complete a hat-trick and a bonus point victory for his team.

2010 – 2011          Sully 12 – 8 Quins II

The Quins fourteen battled hard and despite all the efforts of try scorer Cai Davies, they couldn’t quite manage to defeat the sea-siders. Gareth Evans added a penalty in his 200th game for the Quins.

2004-2005 Quins 20 – 0 Vardre

Quins avenged their early season reverse as they shut out Vardre by completely dominating them in all facets of play. There was no way through for the Clydach based side as they rarely entered the Quins twenty-five. Adrian Lewis gave a masterclass in centre play.

This defeat severely dented Quins promotion hopes, although the home defeat to the same protagonists earlier in the season really did the damage. Nantymoel appeared to be walking away with a victory until two quick tries and conversion brought the Quins to within two points of their hosts. A late converted try finally sealed victory for the Ogmore valley outfit.
