OBITUARY: CONRAD HAWES

This week Harlequins players of yesteryear gather to mourn the passing yet celebrate the life of one of our own.

Conrad Hawes was a rampaging, tough as teak player who represented the Quins with aplomb during the fifties and sixties.

Uncompromising and fearless on the field, he brought with him a fitness, decisive attitude and edge one would expect from a man who served in the Parachute Regiment. Serving in Aden, during a particularly volatile period in the area’s history, when his soldiering training would have been put into perilous, real life practice.

Hawes was synonymous with the Quins. Although it has been some time since he watched the team or visited the club, he is always spoken about in high esteem among his former team-mates and remembered as a stern opponent.

Conrad opened the Ships' Tea Stores in Maesteg and then went into financial services.

Not only did Conrad leave his mark on opponents and in the minds of his colleagues, he will always be annually celebrated, as it was he who presented the Conrad Hawes Cup for the club’s Player of the Year . First awarded in the 1960s many players have proudly possessed this most cherished of ‘in-house’ silverware.

Our thoughts are with the family as we bid a final, fond farewell to a true and faithful friend of Maesteg Harlequins rugby. Rest in glorious peace and God bless.

Mae cariad Iesu drech na mwy.
