ON THIS DAY SEPTEMBER 8TH 1990: TORTURE AT TREFFOREST

SEPTEMBER 8th 1990:

Pontypridd Ath 75 – 0 Maesteg Quins

Having a Laugh

To say the Quins Fixture Secretary Brian Smith had a sense of humour is an understatement. After already playing Wasps Vandals and Maesteg, to round off a testing first eight days of the season a Pontypridd second string so perversely strong they had no less than ten starters with extensive first-class rugby experience, lay in wait.

Comparisons

When you consider a Maesteg team put thirty points on the Quins three days previously, yet this Ponty 2nd XV cruised past that to double the total with the match not going the full distance, it shows the strength of Ponty 2nds.

Played Like Cnuts

The torture at Treforest took a little while to commence. However, at the end of the first quarter onwards, the Quins were like King Cnut or possibly played like Cnuts, as they tried to stem not just a tide but an overpowering tidal wave.

Mere Spectators

Eventually the match was easy to play in. The opponents were so fast and strong the Quins merely watched as their hosts ran through them like a dose of Andrews. They couldn’t even put a fingertip on then opposition let alone a hand. Despite undoubtedly giving their all, embarrassing was too tame a word.
