A STEP BACK IN THE PAST: BROTHERS BEAT BATTALLION, DUCKS, RIDERS AND SEAGULLS

1960 – 1961 (Wed)         Army just fail to take record

Maesteg Harlequins (Tir Iarll) 10pts.; 6th Training Battallion 9pts.

IN their first game of their South Wales tour, the 6th Training Battalion  came very near to taking the Quins ground record, the home side only managed to save the game in the closing stages with a grand rally.

Conditions underfoot were bad for the game and the Quins could not overcome this handicap and played well below their normal form. The Army XV on the other hand, played an extremely fast, open game, and their three tries were a result of hard following up by their resourceful back division.

The game was played in an excellent spirit and was extremely well handled by referee Denzil Lloyd.

FOLLOWED UP

Quins opened the score when forward Colin Nicholls, following a cross kick, touched down near the posts. Alun Griffiths converted. Within minutes the army had reduced the Quins lead when wing Kennell scored in the corner. The kick failed.

Without their regular hooker Clyde Williams, the Quins had to concede most of the set scrums, although substitute hooker Hector Lewis, normally a prop forward, did not allow Turner, the Army hooker,to have it all his own way.

The Army right-wing again scored after a good run, putting his side one point ahead. Within minutes the Army went further ahead when centre Aldred crossed after a good run.

REWARDED

After much pressure in the second half, the Quins efforts were rewarded when a high kick ahead was placed too far away for full-back Slade to field the ball and he had the misfortune to see the ball stick in the mud instead of rebounding. Howard Nicholls* was on the ball like a flash and his kick ahead under the posts resulted in him diving on the ball for a grand opportunist try. Alun Griffiths converted for the match wining points.

1996 – 1997          Quins 5 – 31 Wattstown

Having pulled off a magnificent victory over a strong British Steel side a week earlier, this match was an absolute nightmare as the Quins went down to a hungrier and determined Rhondda valley outfit. Although it wasn’t a league game and the Wattstown team contained more than its fair share of Welsh Districts representatives, the capitulation was unacceptable by anybodies standards.

This was a very good win away from home in the Division 2 MGDRU League, maintaining a good start to the season for the 2nds.

1991 – 1992          Maesteg Quins 4 – 6 Porthcawl

                              Wistech Central Glamorgan Division 1

Yet another two points league defeat, this time against the Seasiders. One more kick would have secured a win but points scoring was at a premium in this match as defences, errors and the weather conditions held sway in this encounter.
