ON THIS DAY 5th September 1990: WHAT DOESN'T KILL YOU MAKES YOU STRONGER

1990 – 1991 (Wed)  Maesteg 30 – 6 Maesteg Quins

In the week prior to this Saturday's big local derby at South Parade, on this very day twenty seven years ago the Quins played Maesteg at Llynfi Road.

Quins who were then playing in Division Two of the Central Glamorgan Wistech League took on Maesteg who were in the higher echelons of Welsh Rugby. Who would have put money on it then that Maesteg Quins would be competing in the same league as Maesteg and even surpass them?

Twenty-six years later it was the Quins who were putting thirty points on the Old Parish on three seperate occasions in the same season.

The tough start to the season was continued with a hastily convened fixture against Maesteg, who wanted a number of matches under their belt in order to iron out some problems before they entered into their league campaign. It was a massive compliment to have been asked to play and the Quins were only too happy to oblige.

Brian Smith the Fixtutre Secretary at the time certainly knew how to set a challenge. On the previous Saturday Quins played Wasps Vandals, then Maesteg, followed by another away fixture against a perversely strong Pontypridd Athletic. A sense of humour was vital when playing during this period and as they say: 'What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.'

Spare a thought for Shane Williams, who was playing in his first season out of Youth rugby and was thrown straight in at the deep end by playing in these fixtures.

Back to Llynfi Road and two Mike Jones penalties were all the Quins could muster and although they couldn’t offer any real resistance or attacking threat, they were beaten without being humiliated by far stronger opponents.
