Seconds Lose but Landmark Achieved

Saturday 4th November 2017

Maesteg Quins II 7 - 17 Maesteg Celtic II

MGDRU

Luke Moore scored the Quins try and Sion King converted. Nonetheless the Quins were comfortably beaten.

Taking the field for the 350th time for the Quins was Nathan Williams.

Williams made his debut in the November of the 1996-1997 season for the seconds versus Bridgend Sports 2nds. A month later he made his 1st XV debut against Cowbridge. It makes you wonder how many games he could have played if he hadn't had had spells with Maesteg Celtic, Tylorstown, Ystrad Rhondda and second team rugby hadn't become such a fixture farce with as few as ten games being played over a season at some points.

At Merthyr Dyfan Road in 2000-2001,  Williams scored six tries in one match against Barry 2nds. This put him in third place in the most points scored by an individual in one game. There have also been other high-scoring individual contributions. Twenty-three against Bridgend Sports 2nds (3T 4C)  and twenty against Nantyffyllon 2nds [T 6C PG] in 1998-1999. In 1996-1997 there was also a twenty-one points haul versus rugby giants Fiona Footwear [2T 4C PG].

Williams has captained the 2nd XV for several seasons.

Possibly his most disgracefully wonderful moment in a Quins shirt came when he scored an eighty-five yards try.

Taking the ball deep in his own twenty-five, Williams was on his way. Firstly handing-off a few tacklers and sending them sprawling. Marvelling at his thrusting 'mushdabs', he outpaced a few more leaving them in his slipstream. Side-stepping and weaving like Gerald Davies he then smashed through the forwards who dared try to stop him to round-off the move against... Waterton [Day Centre] RFC - Animal!

N.B. At the start of the season, Leon Crow had to play thirteen games for his 350th appearance.
