SMASHING PLATE WIN

Saturday, October, 7th, 2017.

Maesteg Quins 25 – 10 Kenfig Hill

WRU Plate Round One.

BACK ON PARADE

Three weeks after being beaten at South Parade, Kenfig Hill returned for a WRU Plate match. Determined to display their true potential, the Mules undoubtedly did, but the Quins seemed to have the destiny of the result in their hands.

QUINS’ SOLID START

Early momentum favoured the Quins. Their surging scrum being rewarded with couple of penalties

Remaining deep in the Mules half, Rhodri Davies’ superb long precision pass, picked out Kieran Watkins who outpaced the defence to score in the corner.

EASY TERRITORY

A bad habit returned. The Quins conceded successive penalties, handing the impetus to Kenfig Hill. Gaining field position and opportunities to pressurise on the cheap, the Mules revelled in the Quins’ indiscipline. Going through wave after crashing wave of pick-up and drives, they pounded the bulwark home defence without success.

CRUMBLIEST, FLAKIEST MAULING

Eventually the Quins broke out. A ferocious drive caused Kenfig’s maul defence to flake away for Dean Ronan to emerge. Although tap tackled, Ronan rolled over to score a second try and conclude the first half tally.

HELP YOURSELF TOM JONES

Straight from the poorly controlled second half kick-off, the Quins were pressurised. Again Kenfig Hill’s phase play was very good, but this time they were rewarded. Even though tackled, Mules flanker Tom Jones crawled across the green, green grass of home territory to help himself to a try.

EXPAND UNDER STRESS

Under strain, with a change of pace, angle and looping run, Rhodri Davies weaved out of a tricky situation to initiate a great break. Releasing the outer backs, a two-on-one was created. Even with sixty yards to the try-line, one more pass would guarantee an unimpeded run. However, the final transfer was inaccurate and only managed to find touch.

Fantastic play from the coal black and blood reds produced the best move of the game. Commencing when Jay Ronan, with legs pumping like pistons, burst through dragging a number of defenders with him. Winning a penalty that was booted to touch, after a couple of quick rucks, Jack Picton was over.

QUINS PULL AWAY

Having taken a control the Quins didn’t want to lose grip of the reins and allow the Mules to buck back into the contest. When illegally halting a thriving Quins driving maul, a penalty try was awarded.

FINE DEBUT AND HEALY GOOD RETURN

A big topic of discussion was how new scrum-half Ben Davies would perform. His impeccable passing made for a fine debut display. Additionally, it was good to see a first team return for Andrew Healy, back after a long lay-off and he was quickly up to speed, with more to look forward to.

After a period of scrum parity, the Kenfig Hill front row began to tire. Lewis Francis was conspicuous. So too was replacement loose-head Deri Lloyd. Awarded a penalty, Rhodri Davies booted it to extend the Quins total to twenty-five.

BUCKING MULES

In a frenzied final flourish, Kenfig Hill poured down on the Quins line. Despite the defiant defence, No. 8 Evan Williams managed to dive over to end the tough, competitive match.
