Cwmllynfell 8 - 41 Maesteg Quins
SWALEC Division One

Cwmllynfell maintained possession and converted an early penalty which stung the Quins into action

In a sustained movement of their own, Jack Piction found himself in midfield and elected to put in a cross kick. Alex Griffiths chased and won the foot race to the ball before it trickled over the dead ball lie.

From a solid scrum on half-way, Rhodri Thomas burst through the home centres and the ball found its way to Kieran Watkin to sprint into the corner.

Cwmllynfell regrouped and were awarded two penalties but both went wide.

The hosts were giving away penalties themselves and the Quins elected for line-outs, before getting to the five yards line and going for a push-over try. Cwmllynfell made every effort to make forward progress difficult. At the third attempt, the scrum wheeled left and Geraint Watkins wriggled through the tackles to score the third try.

The score quickly moved on to twenty at the start of the second half, when Geraint Watkins picked up a loose ball on the twenty-five and he rushed over for the bonus point try.

Within minutes, Lloyd Bradley eyed a gap in the opposition back-line and went on an arcing run to the line. Geraint Evans converted.

Cwmllynfell rallied and manufactured an excellent score of their own. Running from their twenty-five, they instigated a kick, hack-on and chase which wing Bowdy Davies rounded of with a fine touch down.

Playing down the slope suited the Quins and they wound up the match with a couple of fantastic scores. The first from a strong scrum, saw Geraint Evans receive, pass and loop around before re-entering the back-line to break through and run the twenty-five yards to score.

It was pleasing to welcome back Carl Roberts after a season long sabbatical and Andrew Healy who has said Ta-ta to Tata. Both came on as replacements.

The next score saw replacement flanker Aled Evans, operating on the wing, appear from nowhere and blast through the defence. With great composure, Evans awaited support, drew the defender and passed to his namesake Geraint who converted the try after sending Alex Griffiths over for his second.

This was a strong performance and after lying at the bottom of the Division One table, the Quins have now moved up to fourth.
